Liam Breen Bhí an bhua ag an Chlochan Liath a maidin i gcomórtas peile na Gaeltachta. Bhí ocht bpointe ann sa deireadh agus is cinnte gur cluiche maith a bhí ann den dá fhoireann ag tús na bliana. Bhí thart ar chúigear de ghnáth imreoirí Naomh Muire in easnaibh inniu de bharr thinneas agus imeachtaí eile agus mar gheall ar sin chuaigh foireann óg na páirce inniu. Fielding a mixture of youth and experience today, Naomh Muire went down by eight points to Dungloe. Short 7 of the first team through injuries and commitments, the lads got of to a strong start leading by two points in the first 5 mins. There was only 3 points between the sides with 7 minutes left with both sides playing decent open football but Dungloe finished stronger. This was a good work out for the Seniors who start their league campaign in division two in a month. Many younger players got a chance today as several make their way back from short and long term injuries. Two goals from the visiting Burt side helped them to a 2-04 to 0-09 victory i bpáirc Phobal Scoil Ghaoth Dobhair. Congratulations to team manager Danny O Donnell, selectors John McGarvey and Johnny Gallagher and to all the players for an excellent league campaign in division 3 culminating in league honours at this level for the second time (2011 & 1994). For photos from the game...click here. A point was not enough to declare Naomh Muire as league Champions todays as Burt can technically still catch us. However, it may be the crucial last point required as Burt must now win all their remaining 5 games....so if Burt drop any points...Naomh Muire will be league Champions. Unfortunetly, the league will not conclude now until February at the earliest... due to a rule that December/January are closed months. Mixed day therefore with promotion as champions just a kick away....but now this having to wait and see until February. The match itself was a really tense and nervous affair and neither team showed any of their seasons form. It was pretty much point for point throughout and on the day either side could have pushed on and won. It brings to an end and overall strong league campaign in 2011...and the very strong likelihood of promotion which was the original goal at the beginning of the year. Promotion / Relegation Rules
PROMOTION The Team that finishes top of league wins the league and is automatically promoted to the next highest Division. The second and third placed teams in Division 2, 3, 4 playoff for promotion purposes. Where teams finish level at the top, the scoring difference between them decides who is to be promoted. Where teams finish level in 3rd/4th, the scoring difference between them (in their game...s against each other) decides who enters play off with second placed team. RELEGATION Two teams to be relegated as follows. Bottom team in Div 1, Div 2, Div 3 Relegated. Second and third from bottom to play off to decide the other team to be relegated. Scoring difference will NOT decide relegation issues. Playoffs will decide if teams finish level on points A Stephen Griffin (0-09) inspired St. Nauls came away with the points from the banks today after a strong display. The opening period was pretty even and it was nearly ten minutes before the first score was registered, that going to the visiting team. Playing quick ball through the middle St. Nauls notched up their second point shortly afterwards and then went a further point ahead through a stephen Griffin free moments later. A strong performace a midfield setup another number of scores while Naomh Muire had missed a number of chances following good attacking play. Naomh Muire's first score came from corner forward Ciaran McGinely shortly before half time at which stage St. Nauls had put eight points on the scoreboard.
With such a big gap the home team knew they had an uphill battle in the second half. They broke even in terms of possession but the visitors kept the scoreboard ticking over and despite a number of gaol chances the home team could not bridge that gap. Two penalties, one converted in the second half was not to be enough and St. Nauls ran out deserving winners in the end. The league is still in Naomh Muire's hands and a trip to Naomh Colmcille next week has now taken on a new importance. We wish the management and the team all the best next week and hope that they can finish the job. Naomh Muire took another massive step towards promotion this afternoon with a comfortable win against Urris. With Urris not travelling for the reserve game this was the main focus this afternoon and with some favourable results in the division last night, Naomh Muire made sure to push home their advantage at the top of the league. Although the ground was solid , there was a very fast surface and both teams struggled to get the pace of the ball early on. Naomh Muire settled best and led by 0-7 to 0-4 at HT. Urris were only to add 2 scores after the break whereas the young Naomh Muire side pulled well ahead playing some really good fast football in a purple patch in the second half. This was winter football played well. The league is all about getting results and the lads deserve full credit for carving out yet another victory against a physically stronger side. With three games remaining (Home to Burt and St. Nauls and away to Naomh Colmcille) another victory will see Naomh Muire automatically promoted to division 2. Mathematically with their remaining games Aodh Ruadh can draw level with Naomh Muire's current points total while Burt and St. Nauls could both reach 27 points if they win all their remaining games. Burt have a tough run in with four of their five remaining games away from home which includes a visit to the Banks. St. Nauls also face a tough run in with four of their five games also away from home, one of which will be a visit to the Banks. Naomh Muire1.Sean Gallagher 2. Aidi O'Gara 3. Thomas Duffy 4. In a game of two halves the visiting team began well and built up a healthy lead by half time, leading by 0-06 to 0-01. Naomh Bríd came started the second half strongly narrowing the margin to two points with ten minutes remaining. The critical score was the goal to send the home team into a one point lead, one which they would not relinquish. They added on a further four points to win by five in the end. The home team certainly adapted better to the heavy conditions in the second half but with three home games to come, Naomh Muire will be looking to finish the league strongly.
The senior team secured a valuable away point in the league this evening in Clonmany. In a game that ebbed and flowed from start to finish both teams had a chance to win this game. In a tight first half scores were traded with Shaun J Boyle once again on target for the visiting side this week with 3 first half points. With things fairly even in terms of possession Naomh Muire just shaded it by a point at half time leading 0-05 to 0-04 with everything to play for. Urris had a good spell of possession at the beginning of the second half but failed to make it count on the scoreboard, shooting a number of wides to add to their tally in the first half. Ten minutes into the second half the home team were awarded a penalty which they duely converted to leave them two points up. Naomh Muire cut the deficit to the minimum when Owen Grant stormed clear through only to see his rasping shot come off the crossbar and post; the ball broke and Ciaran McGinley slotted over a free which resulted from open play. With time ticking away Naomh Muire were getting more return from their attacking play and soon drew level and pushed on to go two up with only a few minutes left. The next attack saw Urris move the ball quickly down the field and into their inside forwards, creating an overlap that led to a goal to put them one point ahead with less than a minute left. All credit to the visiting side they never gave up and put together another attack which resulted in a 30 meter free. Shaun J Boyle stepped up and made no mistake. Naomh Muire were to launch one final attack but Tom McHugh shot went to the right and wide.
Despite a lot of possession the home team squandered a lot of chances kicking a total of seventeen wides in the end. Naomh Muire were two points up with minutes remaining and levelled it possibly in injury time, so in the end it was a fair result and a massive point for Naomh Muire in their quest for promotion. As many other teams have found this season this is not an easy venue to get points from and so the team and management can feel happy with their work this evening.
